MOSHE TAMIR, ISRAEL

Before he’d even left college, Russia-born artist Moshe Tamir had two awards under his belt. The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design graduate went on to study at the Fine Arts Academy in Rome and the Ecole National Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris before finding fame on the international stage by being awarded first prize for his graphic work at the Biennale of São Paulo in Brazil in 1961. Tamir passed away in November 2004, but his works, packed with symbolism and rich in history, can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Denver Art Museum and in the private collection of the Queen Mother of Belgium.

AVNER SHER, ISRAEL

Artist Avner Sher uses his homeland as constant inspiration. He loves to focus on the rich history of the Middle East, alongside its archaeology, ancient scripts and languages. Sher creates his own modern-day hieroglyphics with the help of cork boards mounted on wood, which he scratches, engraves and burns. Dealing with religious themes in his work, he often references biblical figures revered in Christianity and Islam. One of his most notable works is the recent Ten Plagues, which he created on obelisks. The artist and architect relates to the Cobra avante-garde movement and the work of Joan Miro, Paul Klee and Jean Dubuffet.
