My Reading Room

Let’s think about brains, specifically, your brain with a computer in it. Because one day, perhaps not too far away, the sci-fi interfaces imagined in movies like Ghost in the Shell could become very real.

Imagine what it’d be like to track your location via a GPS and map in your brain, or to search for something online with your mind and see the results right inside.

Or what it would be like for someone who’s been paralyzed to move again, thanks to neural implants — researchers are already working on that (see inside).

How about one day eventually fusing our brains with a computer so as to outwit artificial intelligence? It’s a real enough possibility that Elon Musk is working on it (see inside too).

As with all far-fetched realities, we turn to stories to help us imagine what the future might contain. We recommend an oldie but a goodie from the grandmaster of sci-fi to get you started.

So, brains. Looks like it’ll either be the computers or the zombies that’ll get yours first.
