Watch

For those of us who grew up watching E.T., Stranger Things hits home with a big dose of nostalgia. A kid vanishes in the first episode, and the eight-episode first season is permeated by a sense of mystery made all the more tantalizing by the whiff of danger. All this is set in the 1980s, with kids who cycle everywhere, charmingly clunky telephones, walkie talkies, and outdated hairdos.

A mix of imagination and terror (there’s a very hungry monster involved) makes the show compelling. But ultimately, it’s one universal sentiment; friendship, both old and new, which drives the story forward, as the boys race to find their friend before it’s too late. Stranger Things has all the ingredients to appeal to science fiction and fantasy fans of all ages, and it’s backed by some of strongest acting from a young cast that we’ve seen to date. Catch it on Netflix now.
