ED’S NOTE

HALLOWEEN

Portrait of Tammy Strobel

NOPE, THIS IS NOT a Halloween issue. We don’t have any Halloween-themed content. I think the whole of 2020 has been scary enough as it is. I’m hoping we would actually wake up and realise that this has been a bad Pumpkin Spice Latte trip and it’s actually been an amazing year, of tech, of travel, of geekiness.

Alas, no.

Luckily enough, we live in an age where being forced to stay indoors doesn’t mean a slow descent into madness. Technology connects us to our colleagues and our loved ones alike. But more importantly, digital entertainment has improved so much that it’s a joy to escape from reality sometimes, especially this year.

In this issue of HWM, we usher in the age of 4K video games, with realistic, real-time, ray tracing effects that make you wish the real world looked that good. I’m talking about NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3080 of course. Another development that we’re closely monitoring is the imminent arrival of next generation consoles, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, but those are stories for another day.

On the flip side, because gaming is increasingly become such a big influence in mainstream digital entertainment, we discuss how topics such as diversity, inclusivity and equality has permeated video game development, mimicking real world issues.
