The heat and humidity of our sunny island calls for a routine that embraces a more relaxed, undone look. Enter beach hair. It’s the one style that not only encourages messiness but also embraces frizz. Consider it the perfect foolproof look.

To achieve that gritty, salty texture like you’ve spent a day at the beach, start by working a shine serum through the ends to reduce flyaways before plaiting your hair.

For a natural (and looser) beach wave, “apply texturising product on hair and blow-dry before you separate hair into two sections and then plait down either side of your head into pig tails, starting around your ears” says Edward Chong of Evolve Salon.

“For smaller, tighter waves, separate hair into smaller sections and do multiple plaits through your hair.” To finish, release plaits and then twist hair as you blow-dry.

Fake it

Even if you’re a million miles from the sea, faking salty locks is a breeze. Gently mist your hair with a sea salt spray before scrunching up the ends to encourage luscious curls. Give your hair a rough blow-dry then section it off.

“Take large sections of approximately 2 to 3cm, then curl your hair from your cheekbone down, leaving out the ends and alternating the direction of the curls.” Use your fingers to gently shake out the curls for a natural finish.

Just like our skin, our hair can get damaged by the sun’s rays. We all know we need to apply sunscreen on our skin every day, but our hair also needs sun protection to prevent discolouration, breakage and dry ends.

Invest in a leavein treatment with a UV protectant, and use physical barriers like hats and umbrellas to prevent damage. Tying your hair into a plait or braid will also reduce the amount of sun exposure.
