Spotlight on DNCE

It’s a rite of passage for former Disney kids to shed their cutesy image for something sexier the moment they branch out, and Joe Jonas is no exception.

It’s a rite of passage for former Disney kids to shed their cutesy image for something sexier the moment they branch out, and Joe Jonas is no exception. But hey, just like Nick Jonas’ transformation, we have no complaints there. Now at 26 years-old, Joe Jonas is singing sans his brothers, but with way more suggestive lyrics. You’ve already heard “Cake By The Ocean”, which is – no surprise there – an euphemism for sex. That is followed up with “Toothbrush”, and with lyrics like, “With your messed up hair/And your feet still bare/Would you mind closing the bedroom door?”, he is definitely singing about fooling around. While nothing has been announced as of press time, Joe has spilled in a few interviews that DNCE’s debut album will drop sometime around August. Looking forward to more songs about the dirty, Joe!

Top 5 NDP Theme Songs

Okay, so we might not be the most outwardly patriotic bunch of people but these National Day favourites will always make us feel all the feels.

1 Home – KIT CHAN (1998)

It’s hard to find something that all Singaporeans unanimously agree on, but it’s safe to say we all regard “Home” by Kit Chan as one of the best NDP songs of all time. OF. ALL. TIME. *Kanye shrug*

2 Where I Belong – TANYA CHUA (2001)

Bonus: The accompanying music video where Tanya stares contemplatively out of a taxi while driving through the heartlands. The video looks amazingly retro now that it’s so dated.

3 We Will Get There – STEFANIE SUN (2002)

We’ll just put it out there – any NDP song written by Dick Lee (who also wrote “Home”) is a winner. Hands up if you begrudgingly did the accompanying dance in school as part of PE lessons.

4 Stand Up For Singapore (1984)

LOL. Very cheesy, but quite fun to sing lah.

5 Tomorrow’s Here Today – 53A (2016)

WE ACTUALLY REALLY LIKE THIS YEAR’S THEME SONG. There. We’ve said it. Maybe it’s the folk-pop feel, or the hipster-ish video, but either way, this song will stick in your head in all the best ways.
