You started a business called Katfood. Tell us more about it.
Katfood offers consumers an affordable yet high quality skin and hair care experience, complete with quirky packaging and product names. I left my job as a lawyer in 2014 to start it up after noticing that there was a lack of inexpensive organic skincare options in the local market. I’ve always used and experimented with natural skincare, so going into the beauty business was a no-brainer.
What are some of your best-selling products?
All About That Face Foaming Facial Wash, which contains organic raw honey, almond castile soap, and coconut and avocado oils. John Lemon Lip Balm is another one, which is handmade with beeswax, raw honey, and coconut and olive oils. They have both won beauty awards!
What has been the most difficult thing about starting a business so far?
Everything was a challenge. Being legally trained, I had close to zero knowledge on starting a business. Katfood started as a one-woman show, which meant I had to learn everything by myself as I went along. And I do mean everything – from formulating the brand image and designing the logo and labels on Microsoft Word (yes, I used Microsoft Word till I could afford to buy Photoshop!) to marketing and learning about conforming to compliance requirements.
“I’ve been DJing as DJ Electrokat since my university days, and I absolutely love it to death. I love being able to share my music and give people a memorable night – the adrenaline rush and sense of satisfaction I derive from a good gig is incredible! I’ve played everywhere – from ships and marathons to the Siloso Beach Party and Zouk. It has also taken me to cool places like Bali, Hong Kong, Australia and Jakarta.”
“I currently have two fur babies, Minnie and Mew2. They are sisters and about six years old. I don’t know what I’d do without them.”
