The doctors from the new Boris Valerie Plastic Surgery tell you five things you must know about botulinum toxin injections, which are touted as the answer to more youthful-looking skin.

If you haven’t been keeping up with your 2018 resolutions to have a consistent skincare routine, do weekly masking and go for monthly facials, but still want to look great for the festive celebrations, what you need is a beauty quick fix. For that, you may want to consider botulinum toxin injections.

Well known by one of its trade names, Botox, botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced by a bacterium. Injected into the muscles in minute doses, it weakens the signals sent from the nerves to the muscles of the targeted area. The result: Wrinkles relax and soften.

According to the doctors at the luxurious new Boris Valerie Plastic Surgery (which occupies a space of more than 5,000 sq ft at Tripleone Somerset), the procedure has been around for decades, but there’s still a lot of confusion about what botulinum toxin injections can – or can’t – do for your face. Here, they debunk some common myths:

MYTH #1: THE INJECTIONS WILL MAKE YOUR FACE APPEAR FROZEN

When injected in appropriate amounts into strategic areas of the face, botulinum toxin simply reduces muscle activity. It does not completely eliminate it. However, if too much of the neurotoxin is injected into a specific area, it will stop muscle activity, which can result in the face looking stiff and unnatural. That’s why it’s important to find experienced doctors who can help you to maintain a natural look while reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

MYTH #2: THE RESULTS ARE PERMANENT

Botulinum toxin injections are not permanent at all. The results usually last between four and six months.

MYTH #3: YOU WILL LOOK OLDER IF YOU STOP THE TREATMENTS

Stopping treatments will not worsen wrinkle formation. If you stop doing botulinum toxin injections, the wrinkles will merely gradually return to how they were before.

The effect of the botulinum toxin treatments will slowly wear off, and you will start to see wrinkles associated with normal facial movements. The clinic says that when treatments are done at regular intervals, they can help to minimise visible signs of ageing, such as wrinkle formation.

MYTH #4: IT’S PAINFUL

The discomfort is minimal. Botulinum toxin treatments are often referred to as “lunchtime procedures” as they are quick, and are described by some patients as virtually painless. The needles used are very fine – you would only feel a slight sting during the injection. Patients with a low pain threshold can ask to have numbing cream applied before the treatment.

MYTH #5: BOTULINUM TOXIN CAN ERASE ALL WRINKLES

It cannot. The reason is that there are two types of wrinkles. Static wrinkles are caused by skin ageing and are the lines you can see even when you keep your face expressionless. Dynamic wrinkles develop from muscle movements as a result of facial expressions like frowning or smiling.

Botulinum toxin treats dynamic wrinkles only, by relaxing the muscles involved in those specific facial expressions. This helps to reduce the depth and look of those wrinkles. The procedure does not work for static wrinkles, which require a combination of procedures such as fillers and skintightening treatments.
