POSITIVITY AGAINST ALL ODDS

The future seems bleak now, doesn’t it?

Portrait of Tammy Strobel

The future seems bleak now, doesn’t it? Or at least that’s what most would think, considering the spate of bad news that has enveloped the globe in recent months. And yet, there are reasons to be optimistic. For one, we are living in arguably the greatest period in world history – poverty rates have exponentially dropped, literacy rates have gone up and life expectancy has more than doubled.

If there is one thing that I’ve learned about the human condition, it is that it is determined, strong-willed and capable of great feats when put to the test. After all, it’s always darkest before dawn. And, if the nine next-generation personalities we’ve invited to be guest columnists in this issue are any indicator, Singapore is indeed in for an incredibly bright future.

From vastly different industries, all possess the same fire and optimism that can galvanise people, enrich communities and move cities. I learned a great deal from them and I hope you will too over the course of the next 128 pages. Enjoy.
