WHY THIS DIGITAL SPECIALIST CANNOT GET ENOUGH OF MECHANICAL TIMEPIECES.

DIFFERENT BUT THE SAME (KINDA)

“I’m a digital designer by training, and I used to run Section, an advertising firm. As a designer, you always look out for forms of visual representation and selfexpression. I feel that a watch can tell a lot about how a person perceives time, design and culture.”

ON INTRODUCING WATCHES AT PREMIUM RETAIL EXHIBITION JEWELUXE

“My business partner Angela Loh and I wanted to have watches at Jeweluxe when we launched it last year. Otherwise there was almost nothing for guys. Last year, we had four independent watchmakers who are members of the AHCI (Academie Horlogere des Createurs Independants). This year, 15 AHCI watchmakers will be coming, as well as other brands such as Krayon, and local names such as Azimuth and Zelos. American jewellery and watch retailer Betteridge will also be here with its pre-loved limited edition timepieces.” (Jeweluxe is from Oct 12-21 at the Tent @ Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.)

WHAT I LOOK FOR IN TIMEPIECES

“I do not collect watches with the same design or look. To me, that’s like buying one shirt in different colours. I try to look for diverse designs that can go with different moods and occasions. If I was going to a concert, for instance, I would wear the Louis Moinet Jules Verne Instrument 2 split-second chronograph because of its steampunk aesthetic. Inside the watch is a little piece of lunar meteorite that you can see via the porthole at nine o’clock.”

GIFT OF TIME

"The Baume & Mercier Classima 8791 was my first proper watch. My wife got it for me as a gift four years ago when we got married. It holds a lot of good memories. I told her I wanted a simple watch that looked clean and had blued steel hands – so she followed the brief. I love watches with blued steel hands because the colour is amazing.”

WHY I’M NOT WORRIED ABOUT SCUFFING MY WATCHES

“I try to have two of each watch. One to keep, and one to wear – and perhaps sell in time to come. Right now, I’m looking for the Sympathie Bi-Retrograde by Roger Dubuis, a perpetual calendar watch that came out about 17 years ago. I’m still trying to find one. If I’m lucky, I’ll find a second one.”
