Losing sleep over hair that seems to be thinning, breaking, falling out or growing too slowly? These issues may be caused by a variety of factors, including illness, malnutrition, genetics and hormonal changes.
The growth cycle of hair is made up of three stages: anagen, when a strand of hair is actively growing (lasts an average of three to five years); catagen, when it stops growing (about two weeks); and telogen, when the strand falls out and the follicle is inactive for three months until a new strand grows. Each follicle operates independently, so you lose only a certain number of hairs (about 50 to 100 strands) a day from a healthy head. If you feel that your tresses don’t grow out as quickly as they used to, it could be that your follicles are blocked, or your hair is taking too long to grow out during the telogen phase. Also, if your tresses are brittle and look flat, it could be that they’re not getting enough nutrition during the growing phase.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could shorten the telogen period so new, healthy strands can emerge faster, resulting in a fuller and stronger mane? Sounds too good to be true, but Shiseido Professional’s latest essence, The Hair Care Adenovital Advanced Scalp Essence ($108), claims to do just that – and more.
Like its predecessor – the brand’s Adenovital Scalp Essence V – this improved version has ononis extract to reportedly build up hair’s resilience, and lingzhi and Japanese pepper extracts to work on restoring the condition of your scalp so it doesn’t hinder hair growth. It also has vitamins and minerals to help improve the look and feel of your hair. Its core technology, which was developed after 15 years of intensive research, includes adenosine – an ingredient similar to a naturally occurring compound responsible for active cell growth in the body – to supposedly shorten the telogen phase.
In addition to all that, the reformulated essence is fortified with a new ingredient: the apricot-derived AP Stimulator, which is said to further shorten the inactive phase of the hair follicles so they supposedly take a shorter “rest” after shedding the older strands.
The scalp essence comes in a convenient spray format, which is a breeze to apply. It gets absorbed quickly without weighing your locks down, and even delivers a cooling sensation. You can use it with another product from the same range: Shiseido Professional Adenovital Root Spray, which may be used day and night for a more voluminous mane (think of it as day and night skincare, but for your hair).
