THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: LOUIS VUITTON’S FIRST WOMEN’S FRAGRANCES

If you really know your Vuitton history, you’ll know that the seven EDPs here are technically not the French brand’s first. The first was Je, Tu, Il in 1928, but for reasons we are not privy to, it was short-lived

We also don’t know why they’ve given us seven perfumes in one go. Stuff that we do know: The luxury house didn’t just hire one of the best noses in the business, Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud (Issey Miyake’s L’Eau d’Issey and YSL’s Opium pour Homme are in his resume) in 2012; he is on its full-time payroll. To do anything Vuitton, you need to be Vuitton-fied: immersed in what the French brand stands for – the spirit of travel. So Jacques combed the continents for inspiration, rare ingredients and new extractions (CO2 is one) to capture the essence and feelings of a life’s journey. They are distilled into these seven fragrances: Rose des Vents (pink winds), airy and rose-based, is an invitation to your next adventure; Turbulences emulates intense love at first sight with tuberose; Dans La Peau (in the skin) is boldly erotic and musky with leather, jasmine and narcissus for encounters that bring on desire; Apogee, inspired by the immensity of nature, awakens the senses with green and floral notes; Contre Moi (against me), a fresh – not sweet – vanilla that inspires you to run away with someone; Matiere Noire (black matter), with layers of patchouli, blackcurrant, incense and benzoin balm, implores you to explore your inner demons or the universe; and Jacques calls Mille Feux (thousand lights) “emotional flreworks” with its leather infusion and Chinese osmanthus, iris, saff ron and raspberry. Bottled in Marc Newsondesigned apothecary-style glass bottles with atomisers, they’re purposely old-school, made to be refilled, the way perfumes were in previous centuries. Where to do that? The same places the scents are sold – LV’s Marina Bay Sands and Ngee Ann City stores.

Each scent comes in 100ml ($370) and 200ml ($540) sizes, and in a travel spray set ($370, a travelfriendly bottle with four 7.5ml refill cartridges). For collectors, there are also miniature sets of all seven EDPs ($370).
