Forget fuss-free beauty routines. Korean brands like The History of Whoo show that more can be in the quest for beautiful skin.

For years, the trend was to simplify beauty regimens, replacing cleansers with wipes, ditching toners and using combined moisturiser/sunscreens. Then came the K-wave, drawing attention to celebrities with beautiful – almost translucent – skin, and everything changed. It transpired that Korean beauty regimens were complex, with many meticulously followed steps, and that skincare was perceived as an essential ritual, not a frivolity. Suddenly, the idea of actually spending time on skincare became appealing – if it would lead to perfectly radiant skin.

Boosting serums, for example, are an extra step most other skincare routines lack, but they’re must-haves in Korea. They go on after cleansing, and promise to make everything you apply aft erwards – lotions, serums and moisturisers – work more effectively. The History of Whoo’s Bichup Soon Hwan Essence ($122 for 85ml) is one such serum, and is based on the concept of healing from within.

“Whoo” is Korean for “empress”, and Bichup Soon Hwan Essence’s premium ingredients refl ect this royal connection. The serum has a concentrated version of the brand’s signature Gongjinbidan Complex, an 800-year-old imperial remedy present in all the brand’s products. This comprises six oriental herbs and is believed to balance qi and improve blood circulation. The formulation also includes Gyeongoakbidan, said to moisturise, protect skin, delay premature ageing and minimise the look of pores; Cheongsimbidan, used in the royal courts to soothe skin problems; and Haeulhwan Complex, said to boost detoxifi cation and reduce water retention. Together, these ingredients aim to detox, reduce facial water retention, and prep for the next step in your skincare routine.

The Bichup range also includes Ja Saeng Essence ($205 for 45ml) and Bichup Ja Yoon Cream ($296 for 60ml). Both are anti-ageing products designed to imbue skin with radiance while encouraging it to repair itself.
