Modern Jewellery Made The Traditional Way

Italian fashion magnate Brunello Cucinelli has always done things in new-school-meets-old ways.

Portrait of Tammy Strobel

Italian fashion magnate Brunello Cucinelli has always done things in new-school-meets-old ways. He was one of the first to embrace a more humanist yet progressive way to build a global lifestyle brand (most of its wares are made in a 12th-century hamlet in Solomeo, Italy, by local artisans),  and he opts for handmade products instead of mass production.

His first finejewellery line, Aurum (say “or-rem”), is a 13-piece, 18K gold collection designed in a graphic style for modern-day versatility, and is handcrafted by in-house Italian artisans using lostwax casting, an eco technique used to create detailed or complicated metalwork. (According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, this technique dates back to the 3rd millennium BC.)

Twelve of the 13 items – ranging from a ring to necklaces, bracelets, cuffs and earrings – are available at Brunello Cucinelli’s Singapore flagship at #B1-81 The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. From $2,890. - ST

Korean Label: YCH

Founded by Istituto Marangoni graduate Yoon Choon Ho in 2016, YCH’s aesthetic is described by the designer himself as “punk meets feminism with a classic base”. It’s a sensibility not lost on fans like Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Park Shin Hye who like YCH for its evening wear. At Society A, from $399 for a cotton ribboned T-shirt to $1,199 for a floral embroidered dress.

Clash De Cartier

The last time Cartier introduced a line of accessible jewellery was two years ago, with Ecrou. Now it has Clash, which is priced lower than Juste un Clou (JUC) and is, according to the brand, as gender-neutral as Love and JUC (we do differ where its earrings are concerned, though). It also has diamond pieces. From $2,920 for a small pink gold ring to $18,900 for bling pink gold earrings. The second Clash de Cartier drop will be in September, and will include a diamond bracelet and white gold rings.

Vans’ Cush Comfort Sneakers

In 1976, Vans released the Era sneaker after pro skateboarders Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta gave feedback that they were looking for functional skate shoes. Forty-three years later, the brand is still listening to its customers: the Era now has an even more cushiony interior foam sole and added arch support. From $99 for the slip-ons to $129 for the lace-ups.
