Chief Creative Officer Deborah Lloyd is big on female empowerment, which is why her latest outing at Kate Spade New York alluded to the strength of female daredevils such as Louise Brooks and Josephine Baker. Lloyd also studied the painting, Le Coquelicot by Kees Van Dongen, so it was hardly surprising the red hat that popped up so prominently in the artwork turned up as the main colour accent of the collection. Ditto the quirkiness of the painting’s protagonist, which could be seen in the embroidered cape, leopard printed coats and the bold florals that sprung up on the myriad of tea dresses.
