While it’s comforting to think that “age is just a number”, the truth is, as we get older, skin’s natural renewal cycle begins to slow down, causing a build-up of dead surface skin cells. The result? The corneum (the outermost layer of skin) becomes rough, uneven and lacklustre.

One of the most common – and effective – ways of treating this problem is via in-clinic chemical peels, which work to slough off the surface dead skin cells, resulting in an immediately brighter complexion. However, according to Dr Adam Geyer, Kiehl’s consulting dermatologist: “The treatment can cause skin sensitivity, including redness, irritation and scarring.

“The cost of such treatments also presents a challenge for many patients, as a single visit can set you back between $800 and $1,200,” says Dr Geyer. “Patients must also undergo preparation and precautions to ensure its efficacy, and to minimise post-peel sensitivities.”

With this in mind, New York-based skincare brand Kiehl’s has developed the Dermatologist Solutions Nightly Refining Micro-peel Concentrate, a much gentler at-home alternative that is said to boast the same efficacy of a dermatological procedure over time.

The star ingredient of this anti-ageing overnight peel is quinoa husk extract from Bolivia. Known as a superfood for its protein, amino acid and vitamin content, this is first time that the husk has been used in facial skincare.

To promote the responsible use of natural Bolivian resources, Kiehl’s has partnered with Bolivian suppliers and a foundation that sustainably sources the quinoa husk from local farmers. Over a three year period, use of this ingredient within this formula aims to provide socio-economic development for 250 Bolivian farms.

The night-time peel also contains a powerful cocktail of fruit acids, cactus extract and phytic acid to gently exfoliate. According to the brand’s clinical studies, it encourages cell turnover, boosts radiance, and reduces the appearance of fine lines, while improving skin texture and tone.

Suitable for all skin types, the leave-on peel can be used nightly before your regular serum and moisturiser. Just two to three drops of the watery liquid on clean skin is suffi cient.
