My Reading Room

Let’s be honest: we’re all willing victims of marketing and branding. A Chanel lippie makes us feel luxurious and sophisticated. Compared to a 2.55, it’s definitely a more accessible way to channel the brand. And there’s a reason why celebrity fragrances do as well as they do. It makes us feel like a spritz gives us the aura of the idol behind it.

But there are aspirational beauty products, and there are functional ones. Skincare’s the latter. A moisturiser might be able to make you feel like a brand new woman, but it’s still rubbish if it doesn’t do its job.

That’s why according to just about every top makeup artist, micellar cleansing water rocks. The packaging is often basic, and the cleansing water inside looks and feels like plain water, but don’t be fooled. It’s a makeup remover, and a damn good one at that.

Regular makeup removers work by dissolving or loosening the bond between your cosmetic pigments and your skin so you can wipe away your makeup easily with your cotton pad. However, this means in the first wipe, you’re basically smearing dirt and makeup across your face – it’s impossible to wipe it all away. That’s why you’re advised to double cleanse and tone to remove all dirt, grime and makeup residue.

The new Biore Micellar Cleansing Water comes in two variations, Moist Up (for hydration) and Oil-Control (for combination and oily skin). While they provide slightly different benefits, they’re both powered by Watery Micellar Technology. Micelles are molecular balls that encase dirt, impurities, makeup and sebum as they come into contact with them.

In other words, you’re not wiping away your makeup with a cotton pad - the pad is no more than a vehicle to let the cleansing water lift anything from the most stubborn of makeup (such as waterproof mascara and eyeliner) to impurities deep within your pores off your face. In other words, it’s a more efficient and effective way of cleaning your face.

Biore Micellar Cleansing Water may not be as glamorous as an expensive compact but it does the job. And when it comes to the first step of your skincare regime, surely that’s what matters most.
