My Reading Room

The approaching arrival of Christmas bringswith it the dreaded question: What do you buy a successful person who already has everything in the world? Adding to his or her bauble collection is a hollow endeavour while all the money under the heavens can’t buy time or good health. The latter, however, can be drunk to, and The MacallanRare Cask makes for an ideal toasting tipple.

This mahogany-hued elixir is specially crafted by The Macallan’s master whisky maker, who selects whiskies from 16 different cask profiles, making this the most ever used in a single Macallan whisky.Fewer than 1 per cent of the casks maturingat The Macallan distillery are identified to be worthy of the Rare Cask title, and the rarity of this whisky is underscored by the fact that a number of selected casks will never be used again. Because of the number of cask types involved, as well as the length of time it takes to select them, The Macallan Rare Cask is the most complex whisky from The Macallan distillery.

My Reading Room

Taste-wise, the Rare Cask showcases one of The Macallan’s greatest strengths: its sherry seasoned oak casks from Spain and America. A large number of these are first fill and include some of the most scarce, precious casks. The result of such intricate craftsmanship is a rich, warming, full-bodied whisky with complex flavours of vanilla, raisin, citrus, spice, oak and chocolate. Thanks to a spicy quartet of root ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, the Rare Cask has tasting notes resembling a Christmas fruit cake. Just in time for the festive season, we say. Cheers to that.

The Macallan Rare Cask is priced at $525 excluding GST, and is available at pur veyors of fine spirits.
