Why is red such a pain even in the hands of a skilled colourist? “Unlike blonde and brown, red has more complex undertones like purple and copper. So, a colourist needs to mix several shades to get the result he or she wants,” says Steven Chan, Schwarzkopf Professional’s education manager. “More mixing means more room for error.”

To help colourists do this tricky job better, the German hair brand has introduced Igora #Royaltakeover Pastelfier, a mixer that dilutes pigment concentration and tone without additional bleach (normally, the brighter or lighter the colour, the more bleach needs to be used). It was developed for Schwarzkopf Professional’s 120th anniversary Dusted Rouge collection, an entire spectrum of reds, from barely-there to deep vintage tones.

“The Pastelfier also adds extra ‘lift’ for more high-definition colour,” Chan says. This means the red is more Merida from Brave than Ariel from The Little Mermaid. – KT
