Ask any hotelier and they will tell you that the cleverest hotels in the world marry the best practices from their country of origin with the unique traits of the local city they are setting home in.

Cue the Swissôtel Merchant Court, located conveniently near Clarke Quay MRT Station and nestled in the heart of Singapore’s financial and cultural districts. It has just undergone an 18-month refurbishment.

What guests can look forward to now: more rooms, including 238 Premier Rooms, 18 Swiss Select Clarke Quay Rooms and six Swiss Select Studio Rooms with private balconies. There are also 160 Swiss Advantage Rooms and two exclusive Swiss Executive Floors on which 51 rooms, three suites and a refreshed Swiss Executive Lounge are housed.

If you are travelling with children, the Swissôtel Kids Room is available as an adjoining room and is decorated with toys, books, cute themed bedding, colourful furniture, and child-friendly amenities such as flavoured toothpaste and baby bathtubs – and even Wii games, DVD players and Xbox consoles. The young ones can also expend their energy on the water slides and wading pool on the second storey of the hotel; babysitting is available for a fee.

The latter service lets you enjoy some “me” time at the new luxury Pürovel Spa & Sport, which offers Swiss-inspired treatments using products from Switzerland where the Swissôtel hotel group has its roots. Expect scents that evoke the fresh Alpine air, lush forests and pastures of the famed Swiss Alps.

After all that hard work (of relaxing on a massage bed), chill out even further at the Crossroads Bar with a Cool Spice, a twist on the traditional mojito with the heat of chilli padi, or a GIN-ger Tea – a soothing, warm cocktail that consists of TWG Emperor Sencha, gin and homemade ginger syrup. The bar uses herbs from the hotel’s in-house garden – certainly very “farm-to-table”.

Then whet your appetite at the flagship Ellenborough Market Café, well-known in Singapore for its authentic Peranakan cuisine. Besides a bigger menu of international and Nonya dishes, it now boasts a revamped decor that highlights the Peranakan culture.

In fact, throughout the hotel premises, you’ll find Peranakan traces and touches – which is in line with what Rainer Tenius, the hotel’s general manager, calls “our philosophy of promoting fine Swiss hospitality with Nonya geniality”.
