Free of chemicals and gentle on the skin, these five foods can also double up as makeup. The next time you run out of your favourite lip gloss or blusher, head to the kitchen for these easy substitutes.

1 Coconut oil

Have dry and chapped lips? Coconut oil is super moisturising and gives your lips the natural shine you need. Add a few drops of food colouring to the oil if you want to add a tint of colour to your smackers.

2 Blackberries

If you are looking for a darker lip colour, you can use blackberries, too. These berries will give you a more intense, purplish finish. Packed with antioxidants, it can help reduce premature skin ageing and give your skin a more radiant look.

3 Raw cacao powder

Bronze away with this delicious powder. Use a bronzing brush to apply the powder on your cheekbones for an all-natural contour. Add some corn starch to lighten up the cacao powder to your preferred shade. Tip: Try using light strokes when applying because it can come off pretty dark.

Not only does it look good, cacao powder smells fantastic, too! It can also be used as an eye shadow. All you have to do is mix it with some coconut oil for a thicker consistency before application.

4 Beetroots

These are known for leaving stains on our hands and clothing. So why not use it to stain your lips and cheeks as well? Simply cut this vegetable into thin slices and use your fingers to dab the juice on your lips or cheeks. Apply for plumper and pinker lips, or blend onto your cheeks for a natural glow.

5 Spirulina powder

Who knew that this algae powder could make a beautiful eye shadow? Mix the powder with some coconut oil or shea butter until a paste-like texture is formed, and apply to your eyelids using a cotton bud. Apply more layers for a deeper colour. Spirulina powder is easily available at local health food stores.
