Keep Calm and Practise on

Every yogi knows the importance of having a good mat. Grippy and deeply cushioned, Manduka offers yoga mats in various thicknesses. Feel the difference as you do downward dogs and arm-balancing poses. No more sliding around when your hands perspire. The same non-slip technology also applies to Manduka yoga towels, which are made from recycled plastic bottles. Priced from $70, the yoga mats and towels are available at Fit N Fab (#03-24 Raffles City) as well as Key Power Sports stores.

Should you trim your lean routine?

If you’re pushing yourself to take back-to-back gym classes and skipping rest days to drop kilos, a new study suggests you may be better off downsizing your sandwich than supersizing your exercise routine.

Researchers at Hunter College in New York found that moderately active people – those who work out three to four times a week and get in their steps every day – burn about the same calories (up to 2,600) daily as people doing any greater amount of activity.

“Your body seems to have a ceiling on how many calories it can burn in a day,” explains Herman Pontzer, the lead author of the study. The theory is that while your body will incinerate big calories during a long workout, it might compensate by spending less energy the other 22 hours on behind-the-scenes processes, like those that keep your organs humming.

Any extra sweat sessions will still earn you perks in fitness, strength and stamina, but cut yourself some slack if burning calories has you running on the treadmill overtime.
