Washing your hair is the quickest way to cause coloured hair to fade, says Tien Goh, education manager at Shiseido Professional. Hair swells when it gets wet, and when that happens, the hair cuticles, which help keep colour pigments in, open up. As a result, the pigments slip out. To extend the longevity of your new hair colour, use a pigmented shampoo and conditioner. These formulas coat hair strands with pigment to counter the loss of colour when you shampoo. Here are some new ones to check out:

My Reading Room
For reddish-brown and copper hair

Spice up auburn and ginger hair with Joico’s orange-pigmented shampoo and conditioner to enhance the colour. These products also contain ingredients meant to fortify hair fibres and boost shine.

My Reading Room
For bleached-blonde hair

Bleached-blonde hair turns yellow and brassy when shampooing strips it of its toning pigments. To neutralise yellow and orange tones, use haircare products with blue-purple pigments. Bleached hair will absorb a small amount of the blue-purple pigments from the shampoo or conditioner to neutralise the brassy tones. Hask’s Blue Chamomile & Argan Oil Blonde Care range contains blue-violet pigments to keep your blonde light and bright, and argan oil to help improve the condition of damaged hair.

My Reading Room
For light-to-medium brown hair with or without gold highlights

Created for brunette hair with honey or gold highlights, Joico’s Color Infuse Brown Shampoo and Conditioner have brown pigments to reduce fading, and a peptide complex that reduces frizz so your hair is shinier and looks stronger with every wash.
