One Saturday afternoon, the Her World team, readers, fashion influencers and the flnalists of the TNP New Face 2015 contest turned up in force to strut in style in our weekend best – OK, make that our DIY-ed Fashion Walk tees.

The night before the first Her World Fashion Walk on Orchard Road on Oct 24, Instagram fashion influencer Annabel Tan was crafting away. Earlier, we had given her a Fashion Walk T-shirt, which she then cut into the style of a toga top. She also tied black ribbons to its side to cinch it at the waist.
On the afternoon of our walk, the 31-year-old wore her tee proudly with a vest from home-grown label Skinsnbones and a skirt from Taiwanese brand Amenpapa before completing her look with “comfy Adidas trainers”. And comfy was an important keyword at our event as the more than 1,000 participants had to complete a 1.8km walk led by the Her World team, from Dhoby Ghaut Green to a party at Ion Orchard.

Annabel wasn’t the only one who zhng-ed her tee. Our other guests and readers also came decked out in T-shirts spliced at the hems (fringe is so in this season), repurposed as tank tops and embellished with pompoms and iron-ons. Those who didn’t pimp their tees paired them with cool separates like watermelon-print shorts, skinny jeans and fun socks.
The Fashion Walk, which took about a year to plan and organise, capped a busy year for us as we celebrated our 55th anniversary. Participants were flagged off at 4pm from Dhoby Ghaut Green and greeted by hunky male models at the first pit stop before Oxley Road. The guys were there not only as eye candy, but also to help participants apply the Za True White EX Perfect Protector sunscreen and the Tsubaki Damage Care Hair Water – Silky so we could continue strutting along the road while keeping our skin protected and our hair looking gorgeous!

Next pit stop: Orchard Central, where we watched an energetic cheerleading display before popping into the mall for free samples of the yummy F&N Fruit Tree Fresh Cactus Mixed Juice.
At 313@somerset, 30 of the most creatively dressed participants were “nabbed” by Her World’s fashion police, made up of fashion editor Ian Lee and stylist Evon Chng as well as fashion influencers and Her World Beauty Fashion Friends (BFFs) like Min Poh, Jae Liew, Chermin Lam, Soma Rachel George, Nurul Ali and Steph Leong.
“We were looking out for those who had creativity. The challenge was taking a simple T-shirt that everyone had, and making it into a standout piece,” says Soma Rachel George, 32, a banker and Her World BFF. “I noticed one guy who styled the tee around his waist, while two women teamed theirs with trendy maroon-coloured separates and chunky accessories.” For their eff orts, the top three winners each walked away with $100 worth of New Look vouchers, while the other 27 each received $30 worth of vouchers.
The fashion element came out again outside Mandarin Gallery, where 12 models did a “fash mob” show and delighted the public with the latest styles from New Look and makeup from Za, while percussion band Baracuda Batucada provided invigorating background music. Further down the stretch from Wisma Atria to Ngee Ann City, a K-pop dance crew kept the crowd entertained with sleek dance moves.
Finally, those who made it to the end of the 1.8km route arrived at the much-anticipated party at Ion Orchard. Here, they could redeem free beauty samples at the Za and Tsubaki booths, and try the refreshing Coco Life coconut water and Ice Mountain’s newest sparkling water in grapefruit and lemon flavours. They were also invited to get their eyes checked on the Acuvue Define EDS machine and view the latest Mazda MX-5 model. Meanwhile, celebrity host Utt and Mr Has, Asia Pacific music director for W Hotels, kept the party momentum going. Participants could also further quench their thirst with $8 mocktails from the Salt Grill & Sky Bar, which had set up a pop-up counter at our tent party.

So what did Fashion Walk guests think about the event? “It was a great excuse to have a fun girlie outing!” said Deniece Low, 24, an operations executive. Gwynneth Ong, 28, a sales support engineer, said that she enjoyed herself despite the humid weather and the haze. “I had fun doing the walk with my BFF!”
