Art Stage Singapore

MARINA BAY SANDS EXPO & CONVENTION CENTRE

Now into its seventh year, this year’s edition of Art Stage Singapore sees the return of the Southeast Asia Forum—this time around, focusing on the theme of capitalism and art, complete with talks and a vending machine selling small pieces of artwork. Be sure to check out the Collectors’ Stage, launched in collaboration with local art consultancy, The Artling, featuring the favourite works of six Singaporean collectors. Galleries to look out for at Art Stage include Bruno Gallery, showing selected pieces by Israeli artist Moshe Tamir; Parkview Art HK featuring works by world-renowned sculptor Fernando Botero; and Gajah Gallery, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Singapore Biennale

SINGAPORE ART MUSEUM

With so much to explore at this year’s Singapore Biennale, it’s a good thing it’s running over the course of four months. Highlights include Titarubi’s gold-plated nutmeg robes in History Repeats Itself; Chou Shih Hsiung’s Good Boy, Bad Boy petroleum painting and Harumi Yukutake’s mirrored staircase, Paracosmos. But what makes this biennale extra special is that one artist from the exhibition has the chance of winning the famed Benesse Prize–which, until now, has only been awarded to artists at the Venice Biennale. The winner will travel to Naoshima Island in Japan and create a work for the Benesse Art Site. Visit http://www.singaporebiennale.org

On Point

ELEMENT ART SPACE

Element Art Space explores the theme of illustration as fine art in its latest exhibition, “On Point,” showcasing the works of three Singaporean artists who use this medium to pay homage to daily life in Singapore. Illustrator Mark Wee focuses on familiar scenes such as provision shops and HDB flats, while Teresa Lim uses embroidery to bring her vignettes to life, and Natalie Kwee turns to archival ink to create her cartoon-style images. Keng Lye

K+ CURATORIAL SPACE, SCOTTS SQUARE

Singaporean artist Keng Lye will be showing his latest collection of hyperreal works at K+ Curatorial Space at Scotts Square. Lye uses layers of paint and resin to create near life-like sculptures. Previous highlights have included a terrapin chasing fish; an octopus crawling out of a cup and a goldfish that looks as if it’s been carried home from the fair in a plastic bag.
