On 23rd April 2005, Jawed Karim uploaded an 18 second video of himself standing in front of the elephant enclosure at the San Diego zoo, talking about their trunks. Karim’s video was the first one uploaded to YouTube, which had been created earlier that month by Karim and his two co-workers at Paypal, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.

On 23rd April 2005, Jawed Karim uploaded an 18 second video of himself standing in front of the elephant enclosure at the San Diego zoo, talking about their trunks. Karim’s video was the first one uploaded to YouTube, which had been created earlier that month by Karim and his two co-workers at Paypal, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.

Karim’s video, titled “Me at the Zoo” now has over 46 million views, with over 977 thousand likes and 391 thousand comments. If you visit it, you’ll find that it’s become a virtual tourist attraction, with a new comment posted on the video at least once an hour. 

The following year, when Google bought YouTube for US$1.65 billion, Karim got 137,443 shares of stock worth roughly US$64 million at the time. Today, Karim’s stock is worth more than US$140 million.

As for the very first comment on YouTube? It was ‘’Interesting....’’ on Karim’s video by user Cobaltgruv.
