The Art and Design Issue

It’s a question that’s as old as it’s contentious: What’s the difference between Art and Design?

My Reading Room
Relevant as the query is, the dichotomy is increasingly being erased with the disciplines becoming especially permeable in the realm of fashion today – one need only look to the Met Gala for proof. Here, we do not presume to have an absolute resolution, but instead only add to the dialogue. We pay tribute to the Masters with a S/S ’17 preview, reimagining their works through a photographic lens. We pick and analyse the season’s fashion presentations for their artistic merit. We survey the local scene to assemble a new class of multidisciplinary practitioners. And we let flow the pen (actually, digital stylus) of one of our own, graphic designer Hisyam Abd Rahman, to capture the key looks of S/S ’17 through illustration. His drawings follow in the creative vein of Adeline Tan, whose work is seen on the right. Through her blue florals, we offer this pretty thought: Art need not ask nor provoke, and Design doesn’t just answer and solve, but put together, the two cannot but inspire. – COU
