My Reading Room

There is a stronger link between makeup and art than you may think – both involve the interplay of colours and are avenues of self-expression. The tight bond between the two is thrown into the spotlight with Urban Decay’s new JeanMichel Basquiat collection.

One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Basquiat started out as a graffiti artist in Brooklyn before moving on to huge and complex paintings rich with social commentary. Like Urban Decay, Basquiat was an outsider who challenged the status quo and used colour in nontraditional ways, so it made perfect sense for the two to collaborate.

From the colours and shade names to the packaging designs, everything in the collection evolved from Basquiat’s stunning works. The main highlights of the collection are the palettes, which are housed in mini reproductions of some of his most famous paintings, with makeup colours to suit every look. Whether you’re the experimental type or are into classic looks, there’s an eyeshadow palette for you.

We’re also fans of the Vice Lipsticks, which come in ultra wearable shades of beige, pink and red. Each palette and lipstick cap is wrapped in canvas, and get this: each palette also comes with a small cutout on the back, so you can hang them up and display them on your wall for your own mini Basquiat gallery at home!

DID YOU KNOW?

Urban Decay’s muse Ruby Rose is such a huge fan of Basquiat that she has his portrait tattooed on her arm and his iconic crown motif on her chest! For the campaign shoot, she even brought her own couch so she could be “painted” into it!
