We know that stress can lead to health problems like high blood pressure and even obesity. However, a study conducted by University of California, Berkeley in 2013 revealed that short episodes of stress can raise our mental performance. According to stress expert Professor Ian Robertson, there are techniques we can use to harness the benefits of stress. For example, you can say the words “I feel excited” out loud before a big task, or breathe in through the nose for five seconds and then exhale for six. These “brain hacks” cause an increase in dopamine activity, which “focuses your attention and sharpens you mentally”.
