Cancer sucks. And the battle with it is always a long and arduous one, for both the patient and their loved ones. The medical world is always on the lookout for anything that might boost chances of cancer survival, and a recently concluded study has found evidence that being married might turn the odds in your favour.

The decade-long research by the University of California, which studied 783,000 diagnosed cancer patients, found that married couples have a higher chance of beating cancer due to better insurance coverage and other socioeconomic factors. But it’s not just about the money – married cancer patients might also be physically and emotionally healthier, and receive more social support in such trying times compared to their single counterparts.

Does this mean it’s all doom and gloom for singletons? Of course not, according to Professor Maria Elena Martinez, the co-author of the study. Essentially, married patients have better chances of survival because they have a support system in place. So even if you don’t have a spouse, you can still turn to your family and friends for the same support and encouragement.

“Single patients should take advantage of their support networks, even if they do not have spouses or children to turn to during a cancer diagnosis,” Professor Maria tells The Daily Mail. Phew, good to know!
