Squeaky Clean

Guests opting for Shilla Haeundae’s new ‘Shilla Stay Eco Plan’ package can waive housekeeping services in exchange for discounted room rates. By limiting daily washing of towels and bedding, the hotel reduces energy levels, saves water and lowers the amount of chemicals entering the sewer system. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation says that five per cent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions is produced by international tourism, so this latest initiative by the Korean brand is a welcome step in the right direction. The package is available for minimum two-night stay.

Screened Out

Six Senses has just initiated a brand-wide ban on toxic sunscreens and has pledged to stock only 100 per cent reef-safe products in plant-based and fully compostable packaging. As of September 2019, all of the hotel’s properties will be compliant in offering sun products that do not pose a risk to marine ecosystems. According to NGO Marine Life, up to 82,000 chemicals derived from personal grooming products could be entering our oceans.

Finding the Flow

Luxury experiential travel company andBeyond is making a serious pledge to reduce plastic use by opening a glass water bottling plant at its Vira Vira property in Chile’s Pucon. The company will bottle its own purified water on-site, will provide water in refillable aluminum bottles for excusions and uses only metal straws. The pure water is a natural partner to the locally sourced food it serves, which comes courtesy of the property’s own working farm.
