I hate using sunscreen, natural or not. Can you suggest some alternatives?

Other than covering up with clothes or staying in the shade, it’s hard to find watertight alternatives, so don’t jettison your sunscreen just yet. However, you can shore up your skin’s resilience a few ways. Chomp foods full of carotenoids to minimise the intensity of sunburn (carrots, red peppers), antioxidants to protect cells from UV (citrus fruits, leafy greens) and protective omega-3 fatty acids (salmon and walnuts). Alternatively, carotenoid-filled Astaxanthin or antioxidant-rich Polypodium leucotomos extract and lycopene are useful supplements said to help prevent sunburn. Natural oils like red raspberry seed, coconut and sesame allegedly help block some UV rays, but there are no studies that confirm this, so use with caution, and your regular sunscreen to hand.

I’ve tried so many jetlag remedies, from melatonin to changing timezones while on the plane, but still struggle. Do you have any alternative solutions?

If you have zero time, book yourself into REVIV Hong Kong (or London, Vegas, NYC and Johannesburg among others) during your lunchtime for a Megaboost IV infusion of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, plus a Vitamin B12 booster shot, to deliver sustained feelgood energy directly into the bloodstream. If you have a morning or afternoon free, the Jet Lag Remedy at the Grand Hyatt Hotel’s Plateau Spa (scrub, steam, massage), or Bliss Spa’s Detox Flow (scrub, massage, mask, facial, eye treatment) at the W Hotel, are both post-long-haul lifesavers.

I’m looking for someone to explain stress so I can more efficiently reduce it, any ideas who can help?

The minute you meet Thai wellness practitioner Dr Buathon Thienarrom, a visiting practitioner at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong (she’s back in December 2017) you know she has a gentle soul. She explains that stress and pain originates in the mind, “Stop thinking and the whole body heals.” It’s hard to put into words how she helps the mind and body breathe a collective sigh of relief. But for those with physical issues she performs a healing massage that starts with the head, and travels to the chest and the stomach, where so much tension is held. For those with stress issues, she focuses on breathing and ‘oms’ (sound expression that vibrates in the lower abdomen) unraveling thought patterns, peeling away layers of conditioning, experiences and blockages and releasing them so mind and body can heal. And she gives simple takeaway exercises, like specific mantras to repeat or breath work, to continue the good work.
