Animal Lovers

The Lush Prize is back for the fifth year to award scientists and campaigners working in the fields of cruelty-free research, raising awareness and lobbying. It is estimated that there are as many as 115 million animals used in testing laboratories around the world each year. So to help bring an end to animal testing, Lush and Ethical Consumer Research Association created the prize, which focuses solely on the replacement of such practices. This year, prizes span six categories, including a new Young Researcher award, and offer up a total of £450,000 prize fund to support the winners’ work. www.lushprize.org

Buzzing Oases

To support conservation of bee species, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has recently joined forces with Pollinator Partnership to create 10 new luxurious bee hotels in the US as part of its ongoing Bee Sustainable initiative. Wild mason bees, which are effective pollinators, can rest their wings at these oases inspired by the local surroundings. For example, the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa’s bee hotel takes the form of a wine barrel, while the Fairmont in DC features a design of the Washington monument. To celebrate the cause and raise awareness about the importance of bees in food systems, the participating Fairmont properties have also introduced exclusive menu items highlighting ingredients that rely on bees for pollination, such as tomatoes and eggplant. www.fairmont.com
