Everyone has 24 hours in a day, but some people know how to stretch their time out and make the most of it, and Ginette Chittick, 41, is one such woman. Between training young minds in her position as Programme Leader of the Diploma in Fashion at LASALLE College of the Arts, dropping beats behind the DJ booth, singing and playing bass for her band Astreal and tapestry-weaving, Ginette still finds time to balance her roles as a mother and wife at home.

On the style front, Ginette has never been one to shy away into the background. She injects every outfit she wears with a cool-girl vibe, favouring edgier pieces over saccharine designs, and she’s game to try out anything adventurous – be it a daring silhouette or an interesting fabric. Joined by her husband Shawn Lee Miller and her adorable daughter Luella, Ginette takes on this season’s most eye-catching textures and prints, and talks fashion, art and motherhood with us.

Describe your style for us?

“I’m all about edgy, rock ‘n’ roll-inspired pieces, but I like to tamper them with frou-frou details as well!”

Being a working mother, how has this changed the way you dress up and shop?

“I gravitate more towards sensible shoes like flats, mules or sneakers these days. They make it easier to pick up and run after my very energetic toddler! Honestly, I think I dress better now. I am more adventurous in the way I dress, and dressing up in the mornings for work is one of the ways I destress. So I wake up early to devote a good amount of time to selecting my clothes, and put on my favourite Netflix show as I make up my face. It’s a ritual for my ‘me-time’.”

What’s an item in your closet you cannot live without?

“My collection of bandanas. I love those for a quick change-up to my daily look. Just putting one on instantly says ‘bring it on!’”

What’s a typical day like for you?

“I wake at 6.45 am, take a leisurely hour to get ready and have my breakfast. Then, I wake my three-year-old Luella up, get her ready and send her to school. My mother drives us there on her way to work. After this, I get into work and it’s beastmode all the way. If I have a gig or rehearsal, I’ll inhale my dinner quickly, then go. Sometimes I manage to squeeze in a late dinner with girlfriends after all that is done. At times, I’ll come home and Luella’s already sleeping, but usually I am home every night for dinner and to put Luella to bed.”
