TV and events host Joey Mead King shares with The Weekly the nuggets of wisdom she’ s gleaned from modelling, hosting and life itself. Take some notes!

At 39, Joey Mead King has accomplished a lot in life. She started modelling at 15 and has had an amazing career as a supermodel. She’s worked the camera in New york and Los angeles. Of note, she was the first Filipino model to lead in a Head & Shoulders shampoo commercial and a Lexus car commercial that both aired in Canada. She’s interviewed countless celebrities as a video jockey and TV host, including Keanu Reeves, Morgan Freeman and Christian Bale. More recently, she was a model mentor and co-judge on reality TV show Asia’s Next Top Model where she shared her valuable knowledge with young aspiring models.
Though she does more hosting these days, modelling is something very close to her heart. Joey says that her proudest achievement so far is receiving an award from the Fashion & Design Council of the Philippines. “It meant so much to be given an award by women I have looked up to in the Manila modelling scene, and who took me under their wings. They are my own personal model heroines. That was a big moment for me,” she says.
The multi-hyphenate isn’t one to rest on her laurels, saying that there is so much more she wants to achieve in life. Professionally, she’s currently working on a “celebrity car war show” and dreams of hosting a major pageant like Miss Universe. Joey is also passionate about women’s rights and is a proud advocate for animal shelter PaWS. In the future, she wants to “create a female-oriented show, sponsor a new wing at PaWS, and take up courses like holistic living and animal behaviourism”. Here, Joey shares what makes her the strong, sexy and bold woman we know and love.
Not only did I teach girls about being a great model, but to be an inspiration to others just by being a great human being

INNER STRENGTH IS AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL STRENGTH
MODERATION, NOT DEPRIVATION
MAKE TIME FOR
WARDROBE BASICS ARE A MUST
NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT A LBD

CARRY A BEAUTY KIT
“I learnt this clever makeup tip during my modelling days. always carry around a small bag with travel-sized makeup – concealer, blush, powder and a foldable brush! This will save you in an emergency! I personally swear by Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray, Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow and MaC Mineralize Blush in Warm Soul.”
SHOW YOUR PERSONALITY
“I don’t have any secret method to looking good in front of the camera. I don’t consider myself to be gorgeous but I do know my personality and my passion in doing what I do makes me interesting to watch. I enjoy what I do and I make sure I knock it out the best I can with the same amount of joy and energy for every take!”
CONFIDENCE COMES WITH A SMILE
“I often have to speak in front of a crowd. To do so with confidence, I always scan the audience, make eye contact and smile. I believe in what I am about to share with everyone and I add a bit of my personal touch to the programme.”
BE KIND
“When I meet young models, I always share with them how vital travel is. It broadens their scope not only as a model but as a person. I also tell them to be professional and kind to the people they work with, and remember their names, because one day a production assistant could be a director for a commercial they want to work for. Borrowing this one from Buddha: ‘Be kind to all creatures, this is true religion’. That’s my life motto.”
LEAD BY EXAMPLE
“I loved being a model mentor on Asia’s Next Top Model. The role was created for me in season one by my then producer. I took the role on with much pride. Not only did I teach girls about being a great model, but to be an inspiration to others just by being a great human being. Everyone can benefit from this.”
