When you need a watch that does it all, the classic chronograph deftly treads the fine line between smart and casual.
GOLD STANDARD
The latest version of the Patek Philippe classic dress chronograph, the Ref. 5172G Chronograph demonstrates how a sophisticated take on a sporty complication should look. Aside from elegant touches such as an inky blue dial, applied Arabic numerals, and pushers with guilloche detailing, the 41mm white gold timepiece also impresses with its manually wound, integrated chronograph movement.
CODE SWITCHING
Blending the classic look of a dress chronograph with sleek new touches such as an openworked case and an extra-thin bezel, the Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Self-winding Chronograph plays well with sartorial rule-benders such as an outsize herringbone weave. Leather straps in new colour options, like the grey shown here, give a different look to this 41mm pink gold timepiece.
FOR ALL TERRAIN
Part of the Polaris collection – a sporty-elegant pillar for Jaeger-LeCoultre since 2018 – the Polaris Chronograph is a 42mm automatic watch with a refined-rugged aesthetic. Distinguishing features such as its angular numerals are inspired by the brand’s 1968 diver’s alarm watch, the Polaris Memovox. The Polaris Chronograph shown here is in rose gold. It also comes in steel.
ONE FOR ALL
When creating the latest edition of its LUC Chrono One timepieces, Chopard stripped things down to desirable effect. Instead of the usual cases made of precious metals that measure a sizeable 44mm in diameter, the LUC Chrono One Flyback is housed in a 42mm case that’s made of Titalyt (shown) or steel. Used in industries such as aerospace, Titalyt is titanium that has been strengthened by an electro-plasma treatment – which means this automatic timepiece is as light as it is hardy.
FAIR AND SQUARE
Measuring 43.3mm across, the Cartier Santos Chronograph certainly makes its presence felt. Thanks to the classic design codes of the Santos, it still reads as elegant despite its heft. Powered by an in-house automatic column-wheel chronograph movement, this latest addition to the Santos family is shown here in a pink gold case.
EASY ELEGANCE
Distinguished by its minimalist and classic styling, IWC’s Portofino family recently welcomed its latest addition. The Portofino Chronograph in 5N red gold melds simple elegance with the sportiness of a chronograph in one 42mm package. Red gold hands and hour markers form a handsome contrast to this self-winding watch’s vibrant blue dial.
DOUBLE TIME
Featuring two subdials that overlap to form the figure eight, Jaquet Droz’s signature Grande Seconde has lent itself well to several different complications. The brand recently introduced the first chronograph in the family. The Grande Seconde Monopusher Chronograph was made possible with the creation of a new automatic, column-wheel chronograph movement. This particular iteration, with an off-centre display, is housed in a 43mm steel case and features a sand-blasted silver dial.
