THE VISIONARIES

Great products go hand in hand with great stories – like Mr Leight, an eyewear collection by a father-and-son duo exploring the intersection between past and present.

Portrait of Tammy Strobel

Larry Leight is a true-blue southern Californian with a deep attachment to his surfboard. His other passion is eyewear. In 1987, he founded Oliver Peoples and, as its creative director, grew it into a successful and much-coveted cult eyewear brand synonymous with style and sophistication.

But what’s closer to Larry’s heart today is a project he’s embarked on with his son, Garrett Leight, who is himself an eyewear designer with celebrity fans such as Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski.

The father-and-son collaboration honours a bygone era when a product would speak for itself, before a deluge of media images dictate what is cool. At the same time, it bridges the gap between two generations with an interpretation of the jet-set aesthetic that’s very much relevant in this day and age. This project is called Mr Leight, and it is a new brand created for discerning individuals who love travelling the world, forging meaningful connections, and enjoying everything that life has to offer.

Fittingly, the line is offered by B.spoke, a luxury eyewear boutique that sprung from 46-year-old family enterprise Jamco Optical two years ago. B.spoke by Jamco specialises in niche brands and exclusive collections such as Mykita, Thom Browne, Dior & Dior Homme, and Oliver Peoples.

For Mr Leight, expect classic silhouettes like cat-eye and aviator taken to the next level with unique details such as titanium and pearl nose pads and innovative design elements like adjustable temples, which allow select models to be customised for the perfect fit.

It’s worth noting that each Mr. Leight frame element is precision engineered, and the exclusive materials such as custom and vintage acetates are developed by the original artisanal Japanese shops that Larry Leight worked with 30 years ago.

Decades might have gone by, but for a legacy brand like Mr. Leight, some things don’t change – like relationships, and a dedication to quality workmanship.
