My Reading Room

Get beautiful, glowing skin from the inside out. Just fill your plate with these five nutritious – and yummy – superfoods that are high in skinloving vitamins and minerals.

1 Tomatoes

Eating this fruit may be the key to more comprehensive sun protection. Tomatoes – especially cooked ones – have naturally high levels of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. A study from Newcastle University in the UK found that women who ate five tablespoons of tomato paste daily over a 12-week period had less DNA damage from UV exposure. A note of caution: Loading up on tomatoes doesn’t give you a free pass to neglect applying sunscreen daily!

2 Avocados

This buttery fruit is a great source of vitamin E – an antioxidant that helps protect, strengthen and repair skin. It’s also rich in essential fatty acids that help maintain skin’s natural moisture levels. Say hello to smooth, hydrated skin!

3 Dark chocolate

You don’t need another reason to enjoy it, but chomp on this sweet treat knowing that they’re high in cocoa flavanols, a plant compound that helps hydrate skin and improve blood circulation.

4 Broccoli

This veggie is high in vitamins C and E, and eating it will help stimulate collagen production for healthy, youthful skin. Broccoli also contains a compound called glucoraphanin, which gets converted into sulforaphane, a phytochemical that has antioxidant properties to aid skin cell renewal.

5 Carrots

High in beta-carotene (an antioxidant that converts to vitamin A inside the body), carrots help promote skin repair and offer added protection against sun damage. They also have heaps of carotenoids, an antioxidant that will give skin a healthy glow.
