Honey, I shrunk the hairdryer

The Dyson Supersonic promises to be a game-changing gadget for tresses, but is it worth shelling out $599 for? CHARMAINE LEE delivers her verdict.

It looks good.

First impression: it looks like a futuristic microphone! This is Dyson’s famous bladeless fan shrunk down to a handheld device, meaning there’s no chance of strands getting caught in the hairdryer – which happened to me when I had waist-long tresses. Its accompanying magnetic attachments (two smoothing nozzles and a diff user) snap on easily and remain cool to the touch even while it is switched on.

It’s quiet.

I love how I can dry my hair while watching Daredevil on Netflix – without subtitles and at the usual volume. That’s because the Supersonic is much quieter than conventional hairdryers – it emits only 73 decibels, compared to the usual average of 80 decibels – thanks to a motor that functions at a sound frequency above the audible range for humans. What’s funny is that my dogs come running with their ears pricked whenever I use it!

It dries your hair in a jiffy.

With the Supersonic’s maximum heat setting and airflow, my thick, shoulderlength bob dries in 10 minutes – half the time it takes with my regular hairdryer. This is one powerful machine – you’ll feel the blast of air a metre away.

It’s light.

The Supersonic weighs roughly 618g – slightly heavier than a 500ml bottle of Coke – and part of the reason is its compact motor, which is no bigger than a one-dollar coin. Plus, the motor is located in the handle of the machine – as opposed to the head, as is the case with top-heavy conventional hairdryers – ensuring an even distribution of weight, which makes the dryer comfortable to hold.

VERDICT: It’s efficient, ergonomic and has a beautiful design – buy it if you can afford it!

The Dyson Supersonic is expected to launch in September 2016. Follow the brand at www.facebook.com/DysonSG and stay tuned for pre-order details.
