The Power of Two

It has happened to all of us: An accumulation of an arsenal of skincare that either collects dust in the drawer or confuses us thoroughly after a while. Kiehl’s and Innisfree promise to streamline our needs with one product that combines two.

A Two-in-one Face Serum

When you have been around as long as Kiehl’s – 166 years –it’s safe to say that it knows women’s general skin concerns regardless of the era. The five that keep popping up: wrinkles, roughness, redness, enlarged pores and dark spots. Its Apothecary Preparations Personalized Facial Concentrate range aims to help tackle two of the five skin problems at one time (cosmetics science is not the same as aesthetics; tackling multiple skin problems at one go is neither good for the skin, nor feasible). The line consists of a Skin-strengthening Concentrate ($40) and five Targeted Complexes ($55 each). The first works as a serum base, while the second is what you add to the first. How would you know which two of the latter to pick? Kiehl’s beauty adviser will sort you out.

Apothecary Preparations Personalized Facial Concentrate has to be prescribed to you. Your name and customer reference number will be registered for subsequent top-ups and will be made available at all Kiehl’s stores in the world.

How do they work? Add two tubes from the five (pictured below) to the serum base on the left. Use the concoction in place of two different serums.

The Duo-purpose Pre-serum

Innisfree’s Jeju Lava Seawater Boosting Ampoule & Effector set is uncannily like Kiehl’s – except you don’t need consultations or prescriptions to buy it, and four out of the five key concerns are different (the Korean brand is focusing on unevenness, saggy skin, clogged pores and sensitivity, aside from wrinkles). The pre-serum line’s serum base is Boosting Ampoule (the blue bottle pictured below), and its five Effectors are targeted treatments. Pick two of the latter to add to the former. The three items are $46. You have the option to buy any of the items separately, too: the Boosting Ampoule is $30, and Effectors are $8 each.

Unlike most Innisfree products, which are lightly scented, there isn’t a detectable scent in either the Jeju Lava Seawater Boosting Ampoule or the Effectors.
