Bulgari’s jewellery creative director Lucia Silvestri doesn’t just design stunning pieces. She’s also in charge of buying the gems that are set into the jewellery.

How to make bling look hip

“I think the new way to wear jewellery is really to mix it all up and not be too matchy-matchy. I love to wear pieces from different collections – I’m wearing a Diva necklace with coloured stones, a Serpenti Tubogas watch and a B.zero1 ring in pink gold and ceramic.”

What baubles to buy

“A spinel or mandarin garnet may not be the most precious stone, and may come with flaws, but can look beautiful. Gems ‘talk’ – some people think I’m crazy for believing that! – and I’m always looking for a gem that makes me feel alive.”

Two must-haves

“The Bulgari B.zero1 ring (below) is a great first piece for anyone – it’s modern and feminine, but not too bold. And next, something from the Diva collection because the pieces are so versatile.”

So life-like

“The petals on this necklace move, but not too much. There’s just the right amount of movement.” High Jewellery pink gold necklace with rubellites, amethysts and diamonds.

Her fave piece

“It took a year to find all the gemstones on this necklace. And it was sold almost immediately – I was happy, of course, but I got a little sad when I thought that I would never see it again!” High Jewellery white gold necklace with emeralds, sapphires, rubies and diamonds.

The first Bulgari piece Lucia received

“For my 18th birthday, my father got me a Serpenti Tubogas watch.”
