My Reading Room

Like cleansing one’s face, applying sunscreen should be considered a basic, quintessential step in a skincare regime. After all, experts agree that UV rays are one of the leading causes of premature skin ageing and damage. Add the fact that they can pass through windows and are even emitted by fluorescent lights, and sunscreen becomes indispensable – even if one remains indoors. Sun protection however can have a reputation for leaving a sticky residue on skin or – worse – a white cast, often the main reasons why some women still steer clear of them. Japanese sunscreen expert Sunplay’s answer: a range of ultra light sun care. Dubbed Skin Aqua Sarafit, all four products in the line boast Triple Action UV Shield Technology that absorbs, reflects and scatters UV rays, and skincare ingredients like collagen and hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate skin. The addition of Double Silky Powder keeps complexion matte while allowing skin to breathe, making them perfect for hot, humid weather. The best part? The lightweight textures that blend quickly into skin, leaving no white or greasy residue. Among the four products, the Fragrance Free UV Mist ($9.90) is ideal for those with sensitive skin as it doesn’t contain alcohol, colourants and mineral oil. Leaving a cooling sensation, it can be applied under or over makeup. The watery Fragrance Free UV Milk ($14.90) offers stronger, water-proof protection with the added bonus of leaving skin silky and smooth. The last two are for those who like their sunscreens mildly scented: the Floral UV Essence ($16.90), which doubles as a makeup base, and the Floral UV Mist ($9.90) that disappears into skin with no blending required.

“I’m quite the makeup junkie so I love how this doubles up as a foundation base, letting me cut down a step and save time in the morning. It has a watery texture that feels almost as if I’m not wearing anything at all and glides effortlessly over skin. I also like its light, floral scent that’s sweet, but not cloying.”

“During work, I’m often outdoors and in non-air conditioned places so I need a strong sunscreen that can withstand humidity. With just one application, my skin felt adequately protected and smooth even after a whole day under the sun. My usually oily T-zone also stayed shine-free.”

“I usually use physical sunblocks because I’ve sensitive skin, but I found this mist to be extremely gentle and hydrating. As I tend to reapply my sun protection at least once daily, the spray format is an added bonus as it’s easy to use and won’t mess up my makeup.”
