I used to hate my natural waves, but after spending years straightening them into submission, I’ve finally become more accepting of my hair texture. Just in time too, since perms, specifically, spiral perms, are back in vogue. Ringlets have made it off the runway and are now spotted on the trendy early adopters out on the streets. Serene Tan, salon director at Chez Vous, shares the must-knows about this craze so you can rock it like cool pop queen Rihanna does, rather than go the way of the heartland auntie.

Does hair texture matter?

Actually, it does. Hair that’s of medium thickness is perfect for a spiral perm. “Tresses that are too fine won’t hold a curl well,” says Serene. And if your locks are too thick, you’ll be headed for afro territory.

What’s the perfect length?

Hair length “shrinks” after getting a perm, and for this latest fad, it’s best if your locks at least graze the area just above the chest. Post-perm, the ends of your hair should brush the shoulders, or end slightly below them.

Are spiral perms high maintenance?

Sadly, yes. After washing your hair, you should apply a lotion formulated for curly hair, “then twirl individual sections and air-dry,” says Serene. To minimise hair damage, avoid heat styling; if you’re pressed for time and need to use a hairdryer, be sure to attach a diff user to it – this will ensure an even distribution of hot air so you won’t ruin your curls.

How do I find the right hairstylist?

Look for one who’s been in the trade since the 1980s, when spiral perms were all the rage, advises Serene. “The newer generation of hairstylists may lack experience in nailing this style since there’s been a considerable lack of demand in recent years,” she explains.

Who can pull off a spiral perm?

It takes someone with an edgy character to carry it off . “You’ll also need to dress and accessorise accordingly,” says Serene. Patrick Sin, contributing fashion editor at Her World, says the key to avoid looking dated is to mix masculine, tailored pieces and soft, feminine ones – think a bomber jacket with a pleated skirt and a chiff on blouse – and go for a no-makeup makeup look. Finish off with a devil-may-care attitude.
