Mention “chemical peel”, and you’ll probably think of the fiaking and redness that occur posttreatment. “While they are effective, chemical peels can cause [problems such as skin sensitivity and] scarring,” says Dr Adam Geyer, consulting dermatologist at Kiehl’s. “The cost is also a deterrent; a single session is priced between $800 and $1,200.”

What’s a girl to do then? Well, you can look to the new Kiehl’s Dermatologist Solutions Nightly Refining Micro-peel Concentrate ($99) for help.

GENTLE YET EFFECTIVE

The claim is that this concentrate offers benefits similar to those of a chemical peel – accelerated skin cell renewal, refined skin texture, an even tone and a radiant glow – but at a fraction of the price, with no downtime and none of the skin sensitivity associated with in-office peels. In fact, the brand goes so far as to say it may offer even better results than a 20 percent glycolic acid peel.

The good news is, it is suitable even for those with sensitive skin – the brand asked a panel of testers with sensitive skin to try it, and a large majority agreed that it felt gentle and comfortable, and didn’t cause any dryness, burning, itching, stinging or tingling. It’s apparently so gentle that you can use it immediately after an in-office peel to reportedly enhance the results, improve skin tolerability and speed up the skin’s healing process.

To be used nightly, after cleansing and toning and before your other skincare, this watery concentrate is neither greasy nor sticky. It also sinks in quickly and doesn’t leave an uncomfortable film on the skin. Unlike most peels, it doesn’t dry out the skin.

SUSTAINABLY SOURCED INGREDIENTS

The star ingredient is an unlikely one: quinoa husk extract, which acts as an all-natural exfoliant. These husks, which are usually discarded after the edible seeds are removed, are sustainably sourced from Bolivia (this creates jobs for the local Bolivian communities). The concentrate also has fruit acids, cactus extract and phytic acid, all of which work on combating signs of ageing.
