Gainsbourg’s version of natural isn’t the same as most women’s, and is the antithesis of every Youtube makeup tutorial.

Coming from a lineage of iconic hippie parents – English actress Jane Birkin is her mother and the late French singer Serge Gainsbourg, her father – she is better known for her raw, unmade-up look, almost androgynous features and unpretentious style (fashion designers Nicolas Ghesquiere of Vuitton and Anthony Vaccarello of Saint Laurent are her fans).

Her idea of beauty: to look not so perfect; don’t put on too much; and mascara and lip colour are for the later part of the day as opposed to first thing in the morning.

“For me, it’s really just a question of camouflaging dark circles a little (not too much), spots, and giving myself a little life in the cheeks,” says Gainsbourg.

So what kind of makeup from the least likely candidate for a makeup collaboration?

The 13-piece collection – from sheer lippies and smoky eyeshadows to kohl pencils and a brush set – is centred around her “exact beauty needs”.

“I couldn’t go towards something that was the opposite of me, so it had to be quite natural, nothing flashy, just tinted colours.”
