When the late Monsieur Christian Dior presented his first collection in Paris on 12 February 1947, little did he know that his elegant proposition of a jacket with a nipped waist and a full skirt, cut tastefully mid-calf, would send seismic waves throughout the industry. Aptly christened the “New Look” by Carmel Snow, then Editor-in-Chief of the American edition of Harper’s BAZAAR, the refined silhouette struck a chord among women who were emerging from the shadows of the war and eager for a reason to dream again. In the 10 years that ensued, the superstitious couturier fashioned one alluring look after another, hiding a dried lily of the valley flower within each garment he created for good luck. Not that he needed any—Dior was well on his way to becoming the star he was destined to be.
