GREAT SCOTT!
When an ex-fashion editor launches a kids’ collection, you know it’s going to look good. Inspired by the birth of her baby daughter Honor Yurika, UK-based Yuki Scott decided to create a childrenswear collection that featured high-quality Japanese manufacturing and British flair. With the help of her mother, style writer Yuriko Oshima, she launched Owa Yurika—a brand aimed at girls aged four to 12 years old, which is now retailing at stockists across the globe, from Harvey Nichols in London to Barneys in New York and Kids21 in Singapore.
As is often the case, Scott’s Eureka moment came when she noticed a gap in the market while she was pregnant with Honor. “I saw that the brands were doing similar things, so I thought that we could do something different,” she says. “We wanted to play with shapes, textures and materials. It’s good for kids to be able to choose different things to express their uniqueness and individuality.”
The result is a collection of pieces that are not only functional and durable, but stylish as well. This season, look out for an on-trend athletic vibe mixed with traditional kimono-like pieces. But the key for Scott in this era of fast-fashion is always quality. “We think it’s important for kids to know what’s good quality from a young age so that they appreciate it. Some of our pieces are like couture items. They are meticulously made.” Available at Kids21
