THE BOLD SHOULDER

A spin-off from fashion’s ’80s revival, power shoulders to rival that of Joan Collins in the hit TV show Dynasty are all the rage. Dsquared2 puts a fun, glamorous spin on military band jackets with poufy shoulders in jewel-toned silk taffeta and sequins. Salvatore Ferragamo goes the arty, sculptural route with rounded volumes in a pleated finish. And at Saint Laurent, debuting creative director Anthony Vaccarello adds peaked shoulders to leather bustiers, velvet party dresses and lace negligee tops, creating a modern version of classic leg-ofmutton sleeves.

FLASH DANCE

Peekaboo dressing flits between the extremes this season. On the romantic, ladylike end: Dolce&Gabbana’s embroidered mesh sheaths, Valentino’s gossamer-light gypsy dresses, and Louis Vuitton’s modern goddess gowns – entirely sheer save for nano studs and strategic panelling. On the edgy, urban side: Dior’s tulle confections paired with street-inspired logo undies, DKNY’s translucent boiler suits and Carven’s daring, completely see-through plastic jackets and pants.

SCARLET FEVER

Vibrant technicolor hues are one of the season’s standout trends – and one of the most wearable. The hottest among them: fiery reds and deep pinks. Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli peppered the collection with them, while Moncler champions wearing them head-to-toe with its Gamme Rouge line. For British punk priestess Vivienne Westwood, tone-on-tone vermilion is the way to give classic skirt suits a rebellious edge, while Alice and Olivia offers a Mod option: Contrast with monochrome stripes.
