Selena’s Revival

A brokenhearted Selena Gomez is so last year. The singer-actress is now basking in the success of her career and she seems more confident than ever. If her public breakup with Justin Bieber has shown us anything, it’s that time heals all wounds – and we don’t need bad boys to be fabulous.

From her time as Alex in Wizards of Waverly Place to the bombshell that she is now, Selena’s stylist has certainly spared nothing in making her look amazing.

2009 Loving those pompoms!

2010 Setting the mermaid trend way before it was cool.

2012 An outfit with starfishes? Only Selena can pull that off.

2014 Taking elegance up a notch.

2015 Bold and beautiful is Selena Gomez.

It’s never a good thing being labelled as someone’s ex or living in the public eye in the shadow of a past relationship. But the truth is, Selena Gomez is much more than that, and her past only serves to make her more relatable to women out there. So what does Selena have going for her? Well, for starters, she has three movies lined up next year, and her latest hits have easily weaved their way into the Top 40s. She also has a bunch of supportive friends (including everyone’s favourite Queen Tay) and she’s completely embracing singlehood, too. So really, there’s no better time for the world to realise that Selena is now ready to shake off the ghosts of her past and be her own person.

I want you to know

Even though the media has been exploiting news of her broken relationship with Justin, it’s interesting to note that Selena chose not to stay silent but speak up for herself. “I didn’t think I was doing anything bad by falling in love. There’s such an emphasis on people being the perfect thing and then destroying them because it’s good press. Throw in the fact that you are a teenager – it makes it more difficult,” she says in an interview with the UK’s Sunday Times. The media’s scathing scrutiny was also extra taxing on Selena when she cancelled an Asia and Australia tour to seek treatment for lupus at a rehabilitation facility two years ago. Despite making it clear that she was not in rehab for substance abuse, tabloids were still constantly talking about her possible battle with drug addiction. “I’ve been working since I was seven. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17.

It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story,” said Selena in an interview with Billboard magazine. “I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again,” she added. Her confidence is evident in her latest album Revival, too. Besides taking on the role of executive producer, she also worked diligently with big industry names like Max Martin, ASAP Rocky and Zedd. To better express herself, she also took on the role of songwriting. In a radio show with Zach Sang & The Gang, she revealed that her single last year, “The Heart Wants What It Wants”, gave her the motivation to put herself out there. “It’s not so much that in the past it isn’t me, it’s just I didn’t know how or what I was going to say... I was almost scared to really be myself. “The Heart Wants What It Wants” was genuinely the first time I was able to just put everything away and just go for it. This is what I feel, this is exactly what I’m going to say and it gave me the confidence to drive that into the new album.”

Rise

While it’s almost strange to realise she started out as a little girl from Barney & Friends, we have to say Selena has grown into an incredibly beautiful woman. Advocating self-love, the singer revealed in an interview that her journey was not an easy one. “[I learned] how to love myself first and not just in a relationship. I [used to] give myself so much; I let people pull at me in every direction, and I [wanted] everybody to be happy,” said Selena. “I never took a moment to just go, go away and be myself and figure it out. I kept pushing myself and I think the biggest thing I learned is, it’s OK. I’m going to stop when I need to stop, I’m going to feel when I need to feel, and I don’t care what comes with that or what people want to say,” she said. We also love that she’s spreading body positivity to her fans. When faced with criticisms about her weight, Selena posted a photo of herself in a stylish swimsuit on Instagram with the caption: “I love being happy with me y’all #heresmoretolove.” Keep preaching it, sister!

Same old love

While she’s now portrayed as a glamorous goddess before the cameras, the goofy girl in Selena is still around. Her candidness before the camera is something we’ve always appreciated and we’re glad it didn’t disappear. During an interview with with Zach Sang & The Gang on American radio station 103.3 AMP, Selena was asked to rate her own hotness out of 10. While many people may choose to politely deflect the awkward question, Selena simply laughed and said, “On a good day, I would say – like a premiere day – I would be a good nine. On my everyday, I feel like a six. Gosh, that sounds so bad! I feel like a six or a seven.” Oh Selena, trust us when we say you’re a complete 11, inside and out. Our love for Selena started during her days as Alex in Wizards of Waverly Place and our respect and admiration for her has grown since. We’re glad she chose to turn her struggles into strength and that she’s now doing better than ever.

On the same radio show, Selena said: “I don’t think I would have done anything differently. I like that I have a few things that I’ve gone through. It makes me human, it makes me a person. I love that I am a role model to younger kids, but there is no such thing as perfect and if anything, it allows me to connect with those people who have been in situations that I can relate to. So I can say ‘Hey, I totally get it.’ I actually get it. I’m going to get up every morning and shake off whatever it is I’m feeling and just go for it, continue my life and I hope you can do the same.” Keep doing you, Selena. We’ll back you up all the way.

I’m going to stop when I need to stop, I’m going to feel when I need to feel, and I don’t care what comes with that or what people want to say.
