The worlds fastest SUV is Toyotas Land Speed Cruiser, a souped-up 2000bhp Land Cruiser that cruised to a GPS-verified speed of 370.18km/h on the 4km paved runway at Mojave Air and Space Port in California. The 5.7-litre V8 monster’s modifications include a pair of volleyball-size Garrett turbochargers producing up to 55 psi of boost, much sturdier engine internals and a custom racing transmission.

Less extreme, but still fast and furious by SUV standards, is the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, described by Jeep as the quickest and most powerful full-size SUV on the planet. Its supercharged 6.2-litre V8 generates 707bhp and 875Nm – enough to accelerate the car from zero to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds, squash the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at 187km/h and hit a top speed of 290km/h. The 8-speed TorqueFlite transmission, disc brakes and driveline components have been duly upgraded to handle the Trackhawk’s red-hot performance.
